The My Games Are Different program has been banned by Valve for certain copyrighted materials, namely the mod Golden Compass. However, the mod was only released a few weeks ago and already has become one of the most popular mods of all time. This begs the question: is there another mod out there that is almost as good as the well-known Golden Compass?
The short answer is no. That particular mod has taken the game by storm, becoming an instant sensation upon release. It’s very easy to see why: it takes you on a journey through the enchanted forests of ‘The Forest of Fear’. As a result, it’s not just a fun mod; it’s also a great way to learn something new about game development, as well as gain some skills in terms of modding. Furthermore, as many people have found out, the mod has a number of different settings, ranging from the creepy dungeons of the original game, to the sunny beaches of’journeying North’ – enabling you to play the game in a variety of different settings.
But why stop at simply ‘version’ of Golden Compass, then? In fact, the modding community is buzzing with discussion about a potential sequel, ‘The Hunt for the Wild Stone’, which would take you further into the depths of The Forest of Fear. Could The Forest of Fear to be bigger, more dangerous, more mysterious? And what could a sequel to add to the game that Golden Compass didn’t?
One thing that has become apparent is just how much content the game actually has. The map of The Forest of Fear shows several regions of The Hinterland, from the snowy wastes of Wintergrasp, through the ruined remains of bridges in Sorrowfall, and finally into the heart of the mountain kingdom of Hrostford. There are also several interesting areas for character exploration, such as the prison cells and laboratories of Wintergrasp, the ancient Nordic ruins of Tundalea and the keep of Hammerknell. While it’s unlikely that any of this will make much of an impact on players who have played the game before, it does show that Grissel’s world is far more detailed than fans may have first imagined. The level of detail in the backgrounds and scenery is amazing.
In terms of modding, one of the most impressive things you can do with Golden Compass is to create 1.16.5 your own custom character and faction. With so many customizable options available, it’s quite possible to create a wholly unique character to play in Golden Compass. The modding community is abuzz with talk of future developments and it looks like that future won’t disappoint. For now, players can create their own Harkon or Jorgar faction, play as a randomly generated character, and even upload their own character for play-moderation purposes. If modding is your thing, there are also a number of tools available for users of Golden Compass.
One of the most important things that a game like Golden Compass can offer its fans is emergent gameplay. As anyone who’s played the game before knows, there is always a good bit of adventure to be had, as you trek through the Hinterland on your way to The Golden Compass. And now you’re not just seeing the scenery – you’re experiencing it as you play, too! This feature should appeal to those who aren’t interested in the main story, but still want to experience some of the rewards the game provides for those who do play it.
