Recently, a Placebo 1.16.5 mushroom mod was released for Minecraft. Now, instead of healing with a health pack or by drinking potions, you will be healed by simply using a Placebo. Sounds easy enough, right? I mean, how on Earth can the Minecraft developers fit all those potions into one mod?
This was just my thought process, anyway. Anyway, I dug deeper and dug even deeper, and now, I don’t know what to believe anymore! I started looking into this issue, because, quite frankly, it’s just silly. There’s no way that this mod is helping anyone in any way. Sure, you can heal with potions, but that’s about the only thing that’s functional. I mean, there are some potions in the game, but are they doing anything substantial or helping anyone?
The Minecraft community, to their credit, did a great job of preventing this issue from becoming major. Bukkit started an extensive investigation into the Placebo mod, which resulted in several changes that should prevent this issue entirely. I’m not going to go into details here, as that would probably require another blog post all by itself, but suffice to say that the changes included fixed several problems with Placebo mushrooms. For one thing, they no longer heal you with potions. You instead get a health pack, which you must use before you are healed.
This shouldn’t be a major problem for anyone playing the game legitimately. Also, while the health pack is useful, I wouldn’t want to spend all my time in the game using a pack, as I’d rather be exploring the world. However, the fact that you have to pay money to be healed makes me a little nervous, as it suggests that there could be some modding activity going on at Play-opal.
Not only does this affect me, but several other people I know. It’s a shame that the industry allows so many people to market bogus products, when there are plenty of legitimate opportunities out there. I also strongly believe that the FTC needs to step in and do something about this, because while I think the game is fun, I don’t play it for money. There’s nothing wrong with asking for donations to support the game or paying to be endorsed. But if a company can make millions off of your support, why should you be allowed to use their product to do it? It’s not right, and I feel that this is why several companies will continue to develop games that allow you to make money without actually doing any work!
As for me, I’m just going to refrain from playing the game anymore. If you want to try it out, you can buy the original version on sale, or you can use the “Spoiled Rich Pack”, which has all the same content, but is fresh and contains only the most recent patches. That way, you won’t lose all your progress, and you’ll have the chance to get a feel for the game. You can play the game for free on their website!
